Darryl's melodic worship on bass

"Big D." is what I call a walking contradiction. He is an intellect.
He is an Engineer, He is one of the biggest individuals you would ever
want to see, but he is also a "Good Man"
D. started his musical career in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
He was always fascinated with music. From birth, Darryl has had a musical
gift. Darryl began playing bass guitar at the age of 13 after watching
the church's bassist jam. "I would just sit a watch everything Fat Boy
would do. He was the funkiest bassist I had ever seen at that time." D
also credits the work of Marcus Miller, Victor Baily, Louis Johnson, James
Jamerson, Bernard Edwards, Bootsy Collins, Victor Wooten, Stanley Clark,
Milt Hinton, Nathan East, Anthony Jackson, Jaco, and the list continues,.
for keeping the bass interesting to him.
"It has been my fortune to have met some of the finest bassist
in the country. One of which is one of my closest friends. I learn
so much listening" and watching Ace. As a musician, you must expose
yourself to other influences. Other styles and yes, other bassist. You
learn so much from that. I have had the pleasure to have had people
that know way more than I and are great players encourage, influence and
impact my musical life. Marcus Miller, Victor Baily, Ace Cooper, Steve
Lawson(It was cool jamming with Steve at this years
winter Namm), Norm Stocton, Mike Dimin, Doug Wimbish and the list
goes on. and on... You must assosiate
with "great" people just to be considered good"
"We asked D about his bass style preferences: "When I was a
kid, my cousins would watch after Derrick and me. They had all of the
latest jams. The funk was it for me. I never knew many of the names
of the songs. However, I would always remember the bass lines." I currently play many
different styles from straight ahead jazz to reggae. But I love to
play the funk. Louis Johnson, Wizzard, Verdine White messed me up bad.
I will try a funk line in a hymn or an Opus.(laughs )
While attending Lawrance Intermediate school. Darryl picked
up the saxophone. He played sax from high school through college. "I
don't play sax as much now. We have a saxophonist in our church and
he holds it down." As an adult D has played with several funk jazz groups.
Currently, he is exclusively playing Christian/Gospel/Funk/(any adj.
will fit here) music. "I am the Music Director for our Church. I am also
a member of the groups Thrumm and Set Apart. God music is where it is at.
Ministering with my instruments is my passion, love, calling. God has
been so good to me. The least I can do is say thank you by using one of
my talents to honor him" Catch Darryl at All Nations COG and around the
DC metro area with Thrumm and Set Apart. Currently Darryl
is producing, writing, playing bass and wind synth on Rev. Carl Baker's upcoming
